Campus Safety: Clery Report

 

To whom it may concern,

 

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the “Clery Act” for short) is the landmark federal law that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime that occurs on and around their campuses.

EPIC is required to gather and report “statistics concerning the occurrence of certain criminal offenses reported to the local police agency or any official of the institution. (defined as a ‘Campus Security Authority’ or CSA.

The criminal offenses that we are required to report statistics for are murder/non-negligent manslaughter, negligent manslaughter, sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, liquor law violations, drug violations and/or illegal weapons possession.

We are also required to report statistics for hate (bias) related crimes for the following classifications: murder/non-negligent manslaughter, negligent manslaughter, sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, larceny, vandalism, intimidation, simple assault, liquor law violations, drug violations and/or illegal weapons possession.

We are required to report offenses that occur on campus, in non-campus buildings or on property owned or controlled by the EPIC and on public property (sidewalks, streets, and parking lots).

Under Clery, a crime is “reported” when it is brought to the attention of a CSA or local law enforcement personnel by a victim, witness, other third party or even the offender. [If a campus CSA receives the crime information and believes it was provided in good faith, he or she should document it as a crime report. In “good faith” means there is a reasonable basis for believing that the information is not simply rumor or hearsay. That is, there is little or no reason to doubt the validity of the information.]

Even if the victim or witness wants no police involvement, CSA’s are still obligated to complete a report so that it can be documented for statistical purposes.

We at EPIC put our employees’ and  students’ educational and safety needs first. We of the administration and staff want you, the student and employee  to know that EPIC is a safe place and you may feel comfortable reporting any incidents to the appropriate EPIC personnel, including, but not limited to: Dean of Men, Dean of Women, advisors and other staff according to policy in all handbooks.
